Coinbase tokenized stocks just became borrowable money. Seven Coinbase-issued tokens tracking Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla are now live as collateral on Aave V4's Equities Hub on Base, letting eligible users outside the US borrow USDC without selling their shares, The Cryptonomist reported.

Launch limits are deliberately tight. Risk provider LlamaRisk set roughly $29 million in combined collateral capacity, a $32 million USDC supply cap and a $21 million borrow cap, with collateral factors from 65% to 79% depending on the stock. The stock tokens cannot be borrowed themselves, and cross-collateral borrowing is not yet enabled.

The weekend catch

Chainlink supplies the onchain pricing, but its feeds pause over weekends and US market holidays until traditional trading resumes. Users can still borrow, repay or withdraw around the clock, yet collateral values stay frozen outside market hours, a detail that changes liquidation math for weekend borrowers.

Continuous feeds are expected eventually. Until then, a Friday night leverage position prices your Apple shares at Friday's close no matter what Sunday futures imply.

$46B and climbing

The launch lands as tokenized real-world assets hit $46 billion, up more than fiftyfold from early baselines, Token Terminal data showed. Funds dominate at $34.7 billion, commodities hold $7.7 billion, and tokenized stocks are just $3.5 billion, barely 8% of the total, Crypto Times reported.

That small slice is the bull case. Chainlink's Johann Eid called Aave's move "a major step toward bringing the $150+ trillion global equities market onchain." Rivals agree: Robinhood lists over 200 tokenized stocks for EU users while Kraken and Bybit offer 60-plus across 140 countries via xStocks, Stablecon reported.

What it means for Malaysia

Malaysians already buy US stocks through licensed brokers such as Rakuten Trade and moomoo, but only in market hours and without leverage against holdings. The DeFi edge is 24/7 liquidity: borrow USDC against Nvidia on a Sunday night instead of selling and rebuying Monday.

The cautions are real. Tokenized stocks sit outside Securities Commission oversight, weekend price freezes can strand leveraged positions, and USDC borrow rates apply on top of a ringgit near 4.07 per dollar. Treat it as frontier plumbing with frontier risk, not a brokerage account.

What to watch next

  • Cap raises: $29M is a pilot; watch governance votes to scale it
  • More tickers: additional Coinbase stocks would widen collateral choice
  • GHO borrowing: Aave's own stablecoin as a borrow option is under review
  • Continuous feeds: weekend Chainlink pricing removes the biggest quirk
