Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), putting Iran’s diplomatic agenda back in focus during one of the most important weeks on the international calendar.
Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported that Araghchi arrived on Monday evening local time and is leading the country’s diplomatic delegation at the gathering. He is expected to hold talks with foreign ministers and senior officials from several countries during the UN high-level week.
Iran Brings Diplomatic Agenda to New York
Araghchi said Iran’s main objective at the United Nations is to defend what Tehran describes as the rights, interests and position of the Iranian people on the international stage.
Shortly after arriving in New York, Araghchi also held a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, according to IRNA.
The visit comes at a sensitive moment for Iran’s foreign relations, with regional security, sanctions, nuclear policy and tensions involving the United States and Israel likely to remain prominent topics around this year’s UN meetings.
President Masoud Pezeshkian Also Heads to UNGA
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian departed Tehran for New York on Tuesday to take part in the same UN General Assembly session.
Before leaving, Pezeshkian said he intended to present Iran’s position to international leaders and address what Tehran views as pressure imposed on the country.
His appearance is expected to draw attention as Iran seeks to use the UN gathering to communicate directly with governments from across the world.
US Allows Iranian Delegation With Restrictions
The United States earlier approved visas for a core Iranian delegation that includes Pezeshkian and Araghchi.
However, Reuters reported that Washington imposed travel restrictions on the delegation, limiting where Iranian officials may move while in New York. Additional restrictions also apply to certain purchases.
The restrictions underline the strained relationship between Washington and Tehran even as both sides attend the same international gathering.
What Is Happening at UNGA 2026?
The United Nations confirmed that the general debate of the 81st General Assembly began on September 22 and will continue through September 26 before concluding on September 28.
This year’s theme is:
“Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.”
World leaders are expected to discuss international security, economic development, climate issues and other major global challenges.
